A massive pulp and paper mill dominates the town. For years, it was one of the worst polluters in Canada, but now it's one of the most environmentally safe, and the people were really proud of it.

It took the poisoning of the surrounding areas to bring this about. Grassy Narrows reserve was the first to take the government to court for mercury in their drinking water. Blindness and nerve disorders were still visible. Judy DaSilva, our hostess at Grassy Narrows, who needed crutches to support hereself, talked about reserves being dumping grounds for decades.

Every lake runs into another, it's just a maze of waterways through Ontario. Once one lake is affected, it spills into the other.

The mill cleaned up their act, but the traces of mercury are still visible in the people, the water, the fish.
